Contestation dynamics have intensified in recent years, to the point that they now structure global politics.

This shift is not only due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the resurgence of violent territorial conflicts worldwide, but also to the escalating rivalry between the United States and China.

Most significantly, an informal coalition of countries, including China, is actively promoting an anti-Western discourse and challenging established global governance structures and institutions.

There is a fierce global battle over norms, investments, votes, and more.

Our webinar dived deep into this trend with a panel of EUISS analysts:

  • Alice Ekman, Senior Analyst for China
  • Rossella Marangio, Senior Analyst for EU-Africa
  • Jan Joel Andersson, Senior Analyst CSDP
  • Ondrej Ditrych, Senior Analyst for Russia and EU eastern neighbourhood

Our experts explored three key areas of contestation:

  • Territorial disputes and the resurgence of violent conflicts
  • Issue-based contestation, from fights over climate finance, to debt, to tax regimes and credit agencies.
  • Normative contestation: over human rights, domestic governance and the overall global governance architecture.

The discussion was based on the Chaillot Paper: Contestation: the new dynamic driving global politics.
